Netflix Will Stream Neon Genesis Evangelion In June

For a long time, watching Hideaki Anno's classic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion has been, to put it mildly, a trial. I personally watched it when a member my college anime club lent me a bootleg DVD with terrible subtitles, and as a result it made less sense to me than the the Thomas Mann novel I was reading for my senior thesis. People who weren't broke college kids bought prohibitively expensive official video tapes, DVDs, and eventually Blu-Rays - most of which went out of print pretty quick. In short, it was kind of hard to get your hands on a copy.

Up until recently, there were no signs on the horizon that the acclaimed series would ever be available on a streaming service - the primary way that people watch anime in 2019. Last year, Netflix announced that they'd acquired the license to stream the series, but there was no word as to when that would happen.

The release date has been confirmed. On June 21st, anyone with a Netlfix subscription will be able to watch the the show. Netflix is rumored to be featuring a brand new dub, with an entirely new cast. Why this decision was made is unclear, but it's been met with some controversy, as the original voice actors felt slighted and expressed these emotions on Twitter.

This new dub has yet to be officially confirmed, but the release date has been. If you've been hearing about the extensional crisises and mecha battles faced by Shinji, Asuka, and Rei, and want to know what all the fuss is about, you'll get your chance in June.
