The long-awaited prequel to the fantastic Jujutsu Kaisen is finally here, and it’s as big of a success as many hoped it would be. Jujutsu Kaisen 0, tells the story of the second year of Jujutsu High, back when they used to be first years. The movie has opened to critical and financial acclaim, currently having an 8.2 on IMDb and an 8.6 on MyAnimeList.
Just How Successful is Jujutsu Kaisen 0?
Jujutsu Kaisen is the most successful anime movie of all of 2021. In 2021 alone, the movie grossed $91m, becoming the highest-grossing anime movie in all of Japan. In its first three days in Japan, the movie sold almost two million tickets and brought in a staggering $23.5 million.
The movie was hotly anticipated for an international release, and those numbers are no less impressive. In its opening weekend, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is the second highest-grossing movie, only falling behind ‘The Batman’. Despite being out for only two weeks, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has already grossed $130m worldwide, which sets it up to overtake Scream as the sixth highest-grossing movie of the year.
Two weeks into its release, it’s already the tenth highest-grossing anime film ever, and will doubtless only move further up the rankings as the weeks go by. The movie is in fact so successful that it is second only to Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, the single highest-grossing anime movie of all time.
While its current numbers might not be much compared to Mugen Train, that movie itself didn’t have very impressive numbers until its international release. Moreover, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is currently only available with subtitles, and will only get another boost once the English dubbed version finally rolls out. All signs point to a bright future for the movie.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Will Keep Picking Up Steam
What distinguishes Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Mugen Train from other anime movies is the fact that they are needed to follow the anime they are based on. Mugen Train was a direct sequel to season 1 of the anime, and season 2 was one of the most anticipated shows ever, it only made sense that people would watch what was essential ‘season 1.5’.
While Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a prequel, its story serves the same purpose. It follows Yuta Okkotsu, who will be a very important player in Season 2 of the show, and hence the movie can’t be skipped for the same reason.
Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen was only officially confirmed back in February and is likely slated for a 2023 release. As we grow closer to that, expect a renewed interest in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, just in time for a Blu-ray release. At present, it is hard to say if Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will reach the same heights Mugen Train did, but it’ll still end up being close.
