Get Hyped! The Spring 2018 Anime Season Is Almost Here!
As the Winter 2018 anime season draws to a close, we have to say goodbye to some of our favorite weekly shows, and embrace what's coming up next. Here are a few series that look super rad.
Exciting New Seasons
While there are definitely some cool new shows appearing the Spring 2018 anime season, many of the stand outs are continuations of already popular shows. Steins;Gate, My Hero Academia, Tokyo Ghoul, Sword Art Online, High School DxD Hero, and Food Wars are all getting new seasons, so if you've been meaning to catch up on any of these series, now's the time. Personally, I'm looking forward to the continuation of My Hero Academia - those of you who have been following the manga know that things are about to get intense.
Tada Doesn't Fall in Love
Tada Doesn't Fall In Love is the latest offering from Doga Kobo, the studio that brought us Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun. With such a fun and nuanced romance in their catalogue, it's hard not to trust them with romance going forward. Tada focuses on a taciturn teenage boy who wants to be a photographer and his developing relationship with a foreign exchange student from Luxembourg, Teresa Wagner.
In the past, foreigners in anime have often been crude stereotypes with fake accents, noses so huge and hooked that they're kind of anti-semitic, and names that are completely made up. Tada Doesn't Fall In Love appears to be aware of its future global audience - Teresa just looks like a regular character who happens to not be from Japan. Besides that, it's a first love story told through the lens of art. What's not to love?
Hisone to Maso-tan
I don't normally go for military anime, but Hisone to Maso-tan might just convince me otherwise. It focuses on Hisone Amakasu, a young woman who just joined the Air Self-Defense Force. Because she has a tendency to put her foot in her mouth, she's hoping to keep her distance from others and just do her job - but when the base's secret "OTF" dragon chooses her as its pilot, she can't keep her distance anymore.
I'm looking forward to this for two reasons - one, it's rare to see a female protagonist featured in this type of story - it's usually boys and men who struggle with their own personalities in military settings. Two, the art style reminiscent of Little Witch Academia, quirky fun without looking ridiculous.
Shiyan Pin Jiating
Shiyan Pin Jiating is originally based on a manhua from Taiwan. It's exciting to see the anime industry branching out beyond its national borders for new material, and this particular material seems fascinating. It's about a couple of mad scientists whose children are modified humans, or "creatures," and their struggle to become a normal family.
Tonally speaking, it's hard to say whether this series is going to be more like Interviews with Monster Girls or Geek Love by Katherine Dunn, but I'm looking forward to finding out.
