Destiny 2 is getting another Overhaul including a new Story DLC and Cross-Save.

Bungie and their game, Destiny 2, has been in a state of flux. Current players of Destiny 2 have had mixed feelings on the game while others that are not playing are still curious to see what happens with the franchise. Recently on their Youtube page, Bungie has given gamers a new look at the future of Destiny 2 with their ViDoc “Out of the Shadows.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep

Way back in January, Bungie split up with their publisher, Activision. Since that time, many have wondered what would happen with Destiny. In the new ViDoc, Bungie announced the new DLC, Destiny 2: Shadowkeep. The latest addition to the game is bringing a lot of changes, like a new story, a returning location, new exotics, and of course more bad guys.

In Shadowkeep, our guardians will be returning to the Moon where new structures have been built. Eris Morn has returned, and she has accidentally released the “Nightmares.” These resurrected enemies of the past are wreaking havoc on the Moon, and Eris needs our help to stop the spread of this new threat.

Eris’ long-awaited return to Destiny 2 will remind players of the tone for the Shadowkeep story. It is meant to instill fear in the Guardians and tell them that the Darkness is closer than they may think.

Destiny 2 System Changes

A new DLC from Bungie also means some new tweaks to the game. Bungie has always wanted players to feel a sense of ownership for their in-game avatars, The Guardians, but players also need high gear to complete in-game content. Most of us have always opted for gear function over how the equipment looked. With that in mind, Bungie is giving us what they are calling, Armor 2.0.

Guardians will be able to equip better mods on their gear and worry less about how the equipment will look since mods will change the armor stats. More information on Armor 2.0 will come later on, but it seems like Bungie is going in the right direction for player customization.

Artifacts will also be introduced in Destiny 2. Vanilla Destiny had artifacts to boost Guardian abilities, and this can make our characters stronger. Additionally, Guardians will have “Finishing Moves.” Titan and Hunter finishing moves were shown off in “Out of the Shadows,” but we still don’t know much else about these new attacks.

Crucible will be getting some updates with Crucible Labs returning with new game mode choices. Destiny 2’s Crucible has not received a significant update for at least a year. Bungie has not revealed any concrete plans for Crucible just yet, but they showed glimpses of the Elimination game mode, making a return.

New Ways to Play Destiny

Destiny 2 has been playable since September of 2017, and while they have had an active player base continually playing, it is always helpful for new players to join the fight. In September 2019, Bungie will be dropping Destiny 2: New Light, which is essentially the year one of Destiny 2. Players will have access to the first campaign of Destiny 2, Crucible PVP, the Leviathan Raid, and Co-op Strikes. This entirely free experience will hopefully draw some new players into the world of Destiny 2, and players may only need to purchase Shadowkeep to continue to play with your Destiny 2 veteran friends.

The good news doesn’t stop with Destiny 2: New Light because Bungie also gave us a look at Destiny 2’s Cross-Save feature. When Destiny initially launched, Bungie had wanted this feature, but certain parties involved would not allow it to happen. Since then, Bungie has built the infrastructure to enable cross save through Bungie.net. This means starting this summer, you can activate one account as your main account, and play Destiny 2 on multiple platforms or wherever your friends are playing. PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the newly announced Google Stadia can all be home to Destiny 2.

No word on whether or not the game will get crossplay, but the cross-save function is a massive step toward playing with anyone and everyone interested in Destiny.

Bungie is making moves to improve player satisfaction with Destiny 2, and in the ViDoc they seem optimistic on the future of the series. They are now self-publishing, which can be a daunting task, but they want to make a game that they can be proud of. By abolishing Sony Exclusivity, implementing Cross-Save and embracing the MMORPG genre, Bungie can have an absolute powerhouse of a game.

For someone like me, who stopped playing before the Forsaken DLC, I find myself intrigued by the promises being made. I just hope that Bungie can deliver these promises and make a game that can be considered a hobby.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and Destiny 2: New Light are both launching on September 17th, 2019.
