Anime Gets A Little More Diverse With Carole & Tuesday

Carole & Tuesday is airing on Netflix on April 2019, and it looks amazing. It's being directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, the talent behind the legendary Cowboy Bebop. We could easily end the article here because that's all anyone really needs to know about why they should watch Carole & Tuesday. But it's not just the director that makes the series worth getting hyped for.

The story itself is compelling. In the distant future, humanity has migrated to Mars and set up a thriving society. Artificial intelligence create art, music, and other forms of entertainment. While the purpose of this is to give humans more time for productivity, it deprives them of an outlet for the contents of their souls. Carole and Tuesday are teenage girls from opposite ends of the Martian class system who both want the same thing - to make music that expresses their true feelings. Together, they seek to make their dreams come true - and maybe inspire others. Watanabe is known for directing anime that successfully incorporates music into its storyline, which makes this particular concept all the more promising.

With Studio Bones at the helm, the art, animation and sound are sure to be exceptional. The PV below offers a taste of what's to come.

There's one more thing that makes Carole & Tuesday special. One of the main characters, Carole, is black. Most anime characters are Japanese, and when characters of other ethnicities appear, they're frequently white.

Black people are rarely depicted in anime, and when they are they're often side characters, not leads. It's too early to say whether Carole will buy into harmful stereotypes or be an example of positive representation, but her mere existence is worth celebrating. Anime is getting more diverse, and it's awesome.
